Medical Team

We have more than 25 committed doctors and midlevel practitioners who volunteer to provide excellent care at no charge to the patients. These volunteers come from a wide range of primary and specialty care disciplines.  Meet our leadership team:

Dr. Jessie Stewart serves as our staff physician. She is double board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, caring for all ages of patients. She works part time at UNC and part time at SHC, and patients enjoy her compassionate care and excellent diagnostic abilities.

Dr. Mack Bonner serves as our volunteer Medical Director. Over his multi-faceted career, he has held positions as Medical Director of Harlem Hospital, State Director of Health for the State of Maryland, and most recently, Medical Director for Butner Federal Penitentiary, the largest federal health facility in the country.  He and his wife have lived in Durham for nearly a decade. 

Dr. Mark Piehl is our founding physician and current Chairman of the Board. A pediatric intensivist by training, he now serves as Medical Director of WakeMed Children's Hospital in Raleigh. Despite his responsibilities, patient care with children is his first and foremost joy in medicine.
