"Who are our Neighbors? A History of Health Care in Durham"
Jeffrey P. Baker, M.D., Ph.D.
Jeffrey P. Baker, M.D., Ph.D., directs the Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities & History of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine. A Professor of Pediatrics and the Practice of History, his scholarship focuses on pediatrics, vaccination controversies, autism, and most recently, the history of racism in academic health centers and their communities. He has co-led interdisciplinary projects examining Durham’s health history and activism within Duke Health.
Dr. Baker chairs Duke’s President’s Advisory Committee on Institutional History and frequently speaks on Duke Health’s role in the historical context of Durham and North Carolina. He has taught undergraduates, residents, and medical students, and previously directed the Duke Autism Clinic, Duke Health Center at Southpoint, and the AB Duke Scholarship Program.
His honors include the Dean’s Distinguished Service Award (2025), the Joseph A. Feagin Leadership in Medicine Award (2022), and the School of Medicine Excellence in Professionalism Award (2019). Read full bio ›
