Marie: Caring for Children, Cared for by Community

Marie consulting with Samaritan Staff Physician Dr. Jessie Prestwood

At Samaritan Health Center, community is more than a word—it’s the heart of our mission. Every day, we see how unity and compassion create space for healing, hope, and belonging.

For Marie, that sense of community began with a friend. “I was having a lot of pain and was having difficulty getting in with my prior clinic, and my doctor was about to retire,” she shared. “My friend invited me to come to her clinic, and they even got me in for an appointment the next day!”

Marie has worked as a babysitter for ten years, caring for children in her neighborhood. The flexibility and care she finds at Samaritan make it possible for her to keep serving others.  “The flexible appointment times are helpful for my work,” she said.

Over time, she’s received checkups, specialty referrals through Duke Financial Assistance, and compassionate care that goes far beyond medicine. “All people in this clinic make you feel important,” Marie said. “The concern for each patient, the kindness, attention, education, and quick access to appointments—it’s all a big support.”

She now drives an hour each way to continue her care with us. “I feel very good with this clinic; I feel closer,” she shared. “The doctor prays for us—this is a plus. This clinic is a blessing for the community.”

That closeness—that unity—is what community looks like in action. It’s neighbors helping neighbors. It’s staff and volunteers serving with compassion. And it’s supporters like you who make it all possible.

As we close out the year, we invite you to be part of this shared story of faith, care, and connection. Together, we are community. Donate today.
