Lucy: A Professional Cleaner’s Path to Health and Hope

Samaritan Patient Services Coordinator Paul Van Tongeren helps Lucy choose prescription glasses.

For more than twelve years, Lucy has trusted Samaritan Health Center with her care. “I first came because the clinic was near my apartment—closer than the one I was going to before,” she said.

Lucy works as a professional cleaner, helping maintain safe and welcoming spaces in homes, restaurants, and hotels. The work can be demanding and schedules unpredictable, but she brings dedication and care to every job.  “The different appointment hours are helpful for my job,” she shared. “That flexibility makes it easier to take care of my health.”

Over the years, she’s accessed mammograms, Pap smears, eye exams, and regular medications through SHC. But what stands out most to her is the warmth and attentiveness of everyone she encounters at the clinic. “My favorite part about coming to Samaritan? Everything,” she said with a smile.

Lucy also recommends the clinic to others, including her husband. “He didn’t know about going to a clinic,” she said. “This place is affordable, and health care is expensive. It’s a big help.”

Through SHC, she’s learned to take better care of her health. “I have learned here about prediabetes and how to take care of my health,” she shared.

Lucy’s story reminds us that community is built through care—neighbors supporting neighbors and sharing knowledge, resources, and compassion.

As we celebrate unity and connection this year, we invite you to help ensure that hardworking neighbors like Lucy continue to have access to affordable, faith-filled care. Together, we are community.
